🎄 Genna — Ethiopian Christmas (ገና)

Ethiopian Christmas is celebrated on January 7 following the ancient Julian calendar. The day begins with a solemn midnight church service (Yeledet Qiddasé), followed by feasting with traditional dishes like doro wot, injera, and tella. Communities gather for the traditional stick game of genna (field hockey).

🕊️ Timket — Ethiopian Epiphany (ጥምቀት)

Timket commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River and is one of Ethiopia's grandest festivals. Colorful processions carry the Tabot (Ark replica) to water, where priests bless the congregation. The celebration features vibrant traditional attire, ululations, spiritual chanting, music, and communal feasting over three days (Jan 19–21).

🐑 Fasika — Ethiopian Easter (ፋሲካ)

After a rigorous 55-day fasting period (Hudadé / Abiy Tsom) — the longest in Christendom — Ethiopian Easter arrives with great joy. An all-night church service concludes at 3:00 AM when the fast is broken. Families celebrate with doro wot (spiced chicken stew), freshly brewed tella, and the joyful greeting "Tensae Yistilign!" (May He be risen for you!). Date varies yearly (follows the Ethiopian calendar).

🔥 Buhe — Transfiguration of Jesus (ቡሄ)

Buhe commemorates the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. On the eve of Buhe, children sing door-to-door receiving bread (mulumul) — similar to caroling. Large bonfires (chibo) are lit in neighborhoods, symbolizing the light the Apostles saw on Mount Tabor. Families prepare special bread and enjoy an evening of songs, bonfires, and community.

🙏 Filseta — Assumption of Mary (ፍልሰታ)

Filseta marks the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and concludes a two-week fasting period. It is one of the most revered Marian feasts in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition. After the church service, families break their fast together with elaborate meals. The holiday is especially significant for women in the community.

✝️ Meskel — Finding of the True Cross (መስቀል)

Meskel commemorates the finding of the True Cross by Empress Helena in the 4th century. The eve of Meskel features the dramatic Demera bonfire ceremony — a towering pyre topped with a cross is set ablaze while the community sings, dances, and circles the fire. The direction the bonfire falls is believed to prophesy the year ahead. A UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage.

👑 Hidar Tsion — St. Mary of Zion (ህዳር ጽዮን)

Hidar Tsion celebrates the Church of St. Mary of Zion in Axum, believed to house the original Ark of the Covenant. It is one of the most important Marian festivals, marked by all-night prayers, colorful processions with the Tabot, and joyful singing. The celebration is particularly significant in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church tradition.

🌸 Enkutatash — Ethiopian New Year (እንቁጣጣሽ)

Enkutatash marks the start of the Ethiopian calendar year (Meskerem 1) and falls at the end of the rainy season when the countryside blooms with yellow Adey Abeba daisies. Children go door-to-door singing and presenting hand-painted pictures. A festive day of song, dance, traditional attire, and communal feasting — our biggest annual event!

⚔️ Adwa Victory Day — የአድዋ ድል በዓል

Commemorating the Battle of Adwa (March 1, 1896), where Emperor Menelik II's forces decisively defeated the Italian army — making Ethiopia the only African nation never colonized. This day of immense national pride features lectures, patriotic songs, traditional warrior dances, poetry, and a celebration of Ethiopian resilience and sovereignty.

🦅 Patriots' Victory Day — አርበኞች ቀን

Arbegnoch Qen honors the Ethiopian patriots who fought against the Italian occupation (1936–1941). On May 5, 1941, Emperor Haile Selassie returned to Addis Ababa, ending the five-year occupation. The community observes the day with memorial ceremonies, patriotic speeches, traditional music, and historical storytelling.

🕊️ Downfall of the Derg — ደርግ የወደቀበት ቀን

🌿 Irreecha — Oromo Thanksgiving (ኢሬቻ)

Irreecha is the Oromo people's thanksgiving festival, celebrating the end of the rainy season and the beginning of spring. Participants gather at bodies of water carrying fresh green grass and flowers to give thanks to Waaqaa (God). Recognized by UNESCO, the festival features traditional Oromo music, dancing, and vibrant cultural dress.

💃 Ashenda / Shadey — Girls' Festival (አሸንዳ)

Ashenda is a uniquely Ethiopian festival celebrated by girls and young women in the Tigray and Amhara regions. Young women dress in their finest traditional clothes, adorn themselves with dried grass (ashenda) around their waists, and go singing and dancing house-to-house. The festival coincides with Filseta and celebrates womanhood, beauty, and sisterhood.

☕ Buna Tetu — Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony (ቡና ጠጡ)

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony (Buna Maflat) is a cornerstone of social life. Fresh green beans are roasted, ground by hand, and brewed in a jebena (clay pot). Three rounds are served — Abol, Tona, and Baraka — each with spiritual significance. Join us weekly for conversation, community, and the world's best coffee tradition.
